Nowadays, internet has become the most popular and common way in receiving information, making communications and publishing ideas. Internet has linked to our lives in many many different ways. Surely, students can make good use of the internet in acquiring knowledge, but there are so many distractions online as well. Students may easily switch channels by opening a new browser for YouTube, Facebook or Messenger. How can we avoid these kinds of internet distractions?

For me, I think the most efficient way to avoid these distractions is to turn them "OFF". By turning them off, that means during the hours of revision period, I am only allowed to use the most traditional way, like taking out the textbooks, jotting notes on a real notebook, even searching words using a real dictionary. These may sound old school, but it is efficient to avoid internet distractions. I am quite sure the knowledge and information provided by the printed text on books are as comprehensive as those online.

Of course, we cannot deny that internet is also a great platform in learning if we can make good use of it. There are a lot of YouTube channels assisting students' revision progress and many platforms allowing students to ask questions during the journey. So, it is important for students to stay focused on those areas instead of entertainment distractions. Apart from the personal determination and self discipline, there are some ways students may follow to reduce the chance of distractions when they are trying to revise via the internet.

First, using laptop or desktop instead of mobile phones. Mobile phones can have more entertainments installed easily and students can get an easy assess to those distractions. They may have a misconception and think that just spending a short duration after an hour of revision is logical, but this always end up with several hours of chatting, playing games, etc. So the working efficiency is much lowered.

Second, better to use a clean laptops without any games installed. So, using some public computers will be better. Students get more focused and less distracted when using computers from public areas, like libraries or club houses. Also, as there are no games installed, so using those machines are much safer than those at home. Desktops at home are not suggested as those computers are always put in positions close to the bed as well. So, students can get other distractions at the same time.

Third, set a time limit for the usage of electronic devices for revision, or set a goal when using the electronics during the limited period of time. Everything will be easier to get done when there is a goal or target. So try setting some goals, like for example I need to finish searching this piece of information within 1 hour, or I need to finish those 5 online questions within 30 minutes, or I need to finish the tutorial video within 1 hour, etc. With the time limit and goal achievement, students can always keep in focus and get things done within the limit so as to prevent over usage of time.

All in all, personal determination an self discipline are still the most critical factors in keeping students focus and not to be distracted. So, always keep a right, positive mindset and keep everything into schedule during the revision class.

Hope this is helpful for you during the revision journey !
